The Weekly G.I.R.L.S. by Kevy Kev

The Weekly G.I.R.L.S. by Kevy Kev

It was a banner week at TGSOE; as old friends and new friends combined to make this past Sunday thermonuclear.  Stats to the newest member of the extended collective: Kung Fu Vampire, as well as one of the ORIGINAL originals, C Funk a/k/a Cap'n Crunch a/k/a Prohozack.  KFV tore it down on air, then everybody trooped over to the Zen Lounge, where he hosted a showcase featuring Jern Eye& Pro-hoe, amongst others. Ooooowhee.  Add in an appearance by Kareem from the mighty Boom Bap, & it was a banner night.  Look for big things from all concerned, for real real.  Special stats as well to super Hip-Hop triple threat Mark Spitz, who blessed us w/a a special DJ set featuring many many early Camp Lo treats.  Okay, lots to get to, so:  Onward. . .   Air: (415) 533-9270 • Earth: 57 Cayuga Ave, SF, CA 94112  Water: get@KevvyKev.com [1] • Fire: KZSU Stanford, 90.1 FM, Sundays 6-9PM       Breaking news: In a move that has sent seismic shocks through the Hip-Hop community, DJ, social activist and Hip-Hop tastemaker David "Davey-D" Cook has taken a Program Director position atCountry-Western station 95.3 KRTY, in San Jose.        Faced with an immediate deluge of surprise, questions and outright criticism, Cook has been quick to justify this huge career move by citing the "obvious parallels" between Country, Western and Hip-Hop:  "Many of the themes in Country music are directly lifted from the rich Blues tradition in the US, and as you know, the Blues completely influences all facets of Rock, Soul, and of course Hip-Hop.  I suggest that those who are shocked at this are less than informed as to the commonality in all music.  People really, really need to educate themselves before they pop off." "Knamean?" he added. When asked if his new position would impact his social/political activism, Dave gave a vehement reply in the negative.  "That whole rugged Timberland look, the outlaw culture, the storytelling aspects. . .you have to ask yourself: where did Hip-Hop get that from?  Maybe the Marlboro Man is more Hip-Hop than any of these Backpackers.  Maybe we'll have a new icon. . .the Newport Man.  I mean, do cats even think about this stuff?" ". . .At this point in my career, I don't have to prove anything to anybody.  I've done more for this culture than any of these so-called 'tastemakers.' This is not so much of a change for me, as an expansion. . .a broadening of possibilities.  Bottom line: Tune in to the station, the music will speak for itself." In a move that is somewhat unusual for an acting PD, Cook plans to do a show of his own on the station, every Tuesday night from 4-7PM.  "My focus will be on the Old School. . .you know how I get down.  So you can expect to hear some Rocky Mountaineers, some Hollywood Hillbillies , maybe the International Cowboys and Sons of the Pioneers.  Trust me: Bambaataa has All of those records." Cook dismissed concerns about the redneck racist stereotype of the Country/Western fan, long seen as hostile to people of color. "I don't know about that," said Cook. "Everyone at KRTY has been very receptive, and eager to work w/me, from the GM to the interns.  They've all been great.  Sure, they were a little nervous at first, but after the third Ad Exec said "fo shizzle" to me, I just gave 'em that look. . .and they calmed that s#!t down." Asked if this move was a sign of things to come, and whether he intended to bring Hip-Hop DJs and turntablists on board to nice it up on the Country airwaves, the former urban stalwart was noncommittal. "We have a Black President," said Cook. "Anything's possible." Davey D w/Tim McGraw, at the announcement of Cook's new position at KRTY-FM   I GOTTA give stats to my man DJ Vlad this week, because this is some of the funniest s#!t I've ever seen in my life.  This type of spoof is either tired and obvious, or ill beyond belief.  These guys get At it:     http://www.vladtv.com/video/5789/lol--wu-tang-in-the-corporate-world/ [2]   First up this week: the ultimate Original DJ Posatively Red, who as far as I can tell stood in for D'Angelo when it was time for the mugshot picture.  Talk about Literally takin' one for the team: Whoooooo. . .       Rob Sauthoss of Honey Soul Music & Jimmy Neutron's best friend Carl Wheezer.  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhahahahahahaHA:   And in the Worlds Colliding segment of SAB, we have Metallica's James Hetfield and the Cowardly Lion.  WOW:   April 7, 2009: Thursday Throwdown, at the Shattuck Downlow. 2284 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA. Hip Hop Classics, 80s, Flashbacks, House, Electro, Funk, Soul and YOU, all wrapped up by your boyRen the Vinyl Archeologist, and guest DJs. This week: you guessed it; that Kevvy Kev character. No cover, which means No Excuses. . .Make it happen.     April 22nd, 2009: 808kids & ya boy the Soul Profess present RECESS @ the Air Lounge, proving once again that grown folks like Hip-Hop too. 492 Ninth St. at Washington, in Oakland.  The sexy folks come, Kevvy Kev rubs records, and everybody wins. April 24th, 2009: VYBZ at the Element Lounge. 1028 Geary between Polk and Van Ness, in SF. We're Back, w/the Flyest monthly bash in the Bay!  Those of you who've been know, those who haven't, Correct That Immediately.  Sounds by DJ Venom, I-Cue, and Kevvy Kev.  Bottom line: It's the cure for what ails ya.   It's the best part of your week every week: It's The Drum, Son. It's just the Right Thing To Do. Every Sunday from 6-9PM at KZSU Stanford, 90.1 FM, available via live broadcast, online athttp://kzsulive.stanford.edu [3], or podcast for posterity at underheard.org [4]. Spread the good word.  First Amongst Equals this week is that new Camp Lo mixtape Stone & Rob.  OOOoooowheee; you know the rules: cop it.  We need these cats to Keep Making Music.       privy [5] [priv-ee] -adj 1.
